Johns Hopkins University President Ronald J. Daniels issued the following statement today on U.S. House of Representatives passage of the 21st Century Cures Act:
“Today’s strong bipartisan vote puts us on an exciting path to address critical NIH funding needs and fuel innovation in medical research. The 21st Century Cures bill reflects a shared belief in the crucial role of NIH-supported research in effecting cures for patients and their families, and specifically taps into the potential of early-stage investigators.”
Note: President Daniels and Paul Rothman, CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine and dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, have particularly focused on the funding challenges facing early-career scientists. They have published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal and a longer thought piece in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
