Johns Hopkins Biologist Leads Team That Unlocks Mystery of Protein Function

A scientific team led by a Johns Hopkins University biologist has cracked a key part of the mystery surrounding proteins that emerged as a distinct type less than 30 years ago, a breakthrough that could eventually lead to treatments for diseases that range from cancer to neurological disorders.

Unlocking the Key to Premature Aging in Children

Using a $325,000 National Institutes of Health grant supplement, administered by the federal stimulus act, Susan Michaelis and her team at the School of Medicine are working hard to unlock the secrets of progeria, a disease that afflicts more than 50 children in 30 countries. Specifically, Michaelis is investigating the role that a protein known as lamin A plays in the disease.
