Johns Hopkins University’s 14th president is asking students, faculty and staff to “Be the Change” this Saturday with a day of service. Approximately 1,000 members of the university community will serve with over 45 Baltimore City community agencies as a part of President Ronald Daniels’ installation weekend. Daniels will kick off the event, organized by the university’s Center for Social Concern, at 1:15 p.m. at the O’Connor Recreation Center on the Homewood campus. Other speakers will include Ralph Moore, a Johns Hopkins alumnus and current director of the St. Francis Academy Community Center. Participants will arrive at area service sites by 2 p.m. A volunteer celebration at the recreation center will follow at 4:30 p.m.

President Daniels will volunteer at three service sites, including a painting project at the Academy for College and Career Exploration; an alley gating and greening and community garden site in the Remington community; and a sandwich making project for Sisters Together and Reaching, an HIV prevention program, at the Johns Hopkins Bunting-Meyerhoff Interfaith and Community Service Center.

The day’s event is the symbolic beginning of Daniels’ efforts to bolster the university’s community engagement efforts for the academic year.
