The Johns Hopkins University is offering early admission to 526 students from 39 U.S. states and 24 countries into its Class of 2018. The university chose them from a record 1,595 early decision applicants — up 11 percent over last year.

Announcements will be made at 3 p.m. today, Friday, Dec. 13, to those who indicated Johns Hopkins as their first choice school by applying early decision.

Eighty percent of the admitted students are in the top 10 percent of their high school class. The middle 50th percentile of the admitted students’ test scores range from 1380 to 1510 on the SAT and 31 to 34 on the ACT. This class of early decision students represents the strongest foundation for an incoming freshman class in the university’s history, both academically and in terms of their extracurricular leadership and community engagement.

“While this is certainly the most competitive early decision pool that the university has seen, we are most excited to see the diversity of academic passions and the incredible achievements of these students who have chosen Johns Hopkins as the next step in their academic pursuits,” said Ellen Kim, director of undergraduate admissions. “Their interests span across so many disciplines from archaeology and art history to economics and computer science. These students represent the foundation for the next class of Johns Hopkins who will contribute to the dynamic intellectual environment on our campus.”

The number of admitted students includes 366 for the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and 160 for the Whiting School of Engineering.

The early decision group will make up approximately 40 percent of the incoming class. The remainder of the Class of 2018 will be selected from the regular decision applicant pool. Regular decision applications are due Jan. 1, and admissions decisions will be released by April 1.

The Class of 2017 numbered 1,317 students chosen from a record applicant pool of 20,614.
