Teachers to Get Deep Dive Into Research on Learning

Educators will meet scientists doing the work that could change how they teach

WHAT: Though learning is their stock and trade, educators are often removed from research on how people learn. To address this, Johns Hopkins University’s Science of Learning Institute has invited 150 teachers and administrators from around the world to Baltimore for a day to meet scientists doing cutting-edge research on the brain and learning.

During Science in Action Day, educators coming from as far away as Africa and as close as Baltimore, will spend time with researchers asking fundamental questions about how people learn, and how that cognitive understanding might lead to better teaching methods and ways to close the achievement gap.

Science in Action Day is part of a five-day Science of Teaching and School Leadership Academy, sponsored by the Center for Transformative Teaching & Learning in Potomac, Md. There is a waitlist of nearly 100 to get into the program, where educators will do everything from dissect a sheep’s brain to create new lesson plans based on what they’ve learned.

WHEN: The five-day program runs July 23 to July 27. Science in Action Day in Baltimore is Wednesday July 26 from approximately 1 to 6 p.m. Lab tours, where educators will interact with scientists, will be happening from about 1:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

WHERE: Science in Action Day happens at Johns Hopkins’ Homewood campus, 3400 North Charles St. The rest of the academy happens at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, 8804 Postoak Road, Potomac, 20854.

WHY: Teachers report being very interested in scientific findings with potential classroom applications but rarely have a chance to see for themselves how researchers come to these conclusions. The program’s goal is to help educators understand the questions scientists are asking about how humans learn and to see firsthand how university findings travel from lab to classroom.
