Johns Hopkins University leaders sent an email message on Friday, July 14, providing Homewood campus students with an update regarding the recent death of rising sophomore Abigail Bastien. The following is the text of the message:

Dear Homewood Students,

In moments of loss and grief at Johns Hopkins, we are deeply grateful for the ways in which the members of our community support each other. Following yesterday’s news of the tragic loss of Abby Bastien, a rising sophomore, we are enormously appreciative of all your efforts to support Abby’s family and one other, particularly those who were close to her.

The university remains committed to assisting Abby’s family in whatever way we can in this heartbreaking moment and to providing support to all those affected by her passing. If you or a friend needs support over this weekend, we encourage you to reach out. You may call Campus Safety and Security (410-516-7777) to be connected to the Counseling Center or to Student Life.

The university is working with the Baltimore Police Department to support BPD’s ongoing investigation of Abby’s death. At this time, BPD continues to inform us that “there were no obvious signs of foul play at the scene.” However, in an abundance of caution, we have increased the visible presence of Campus Safety and Security in the area of 3700 N. Charles St.

We will share further developments with you as warranted. In the meantime, we urge you to continue to honor Abby’s memory and to remain steadfast in your support for each other.
